Homeboys

Last year, the After School students consisted of 15 girls and 2 boys.  The two boys were romantics who had interesting imaginations.  They wrote stories about heart break, they had a sense of humor and were just good kids.  이반석 just wrote about whatever was on his mind.  In class he got along with people, but wasn't sure if it was alright to sit alone.  When it came to creating stories, he wanted me to read it but not to see it until it was finished.  I admire his concentration.  나동수 is a handsome lad with an unusually raspy voice, as if he smoked since child birth.  He was pretty silent most of the time, but his contribution was his analysis.  He gets the right answers.  And his friends in his homeroom class all look so mopey.  But when these two got together they would play, throw a ball made of crumpled paper and tape.  Although they are not in the same homeroom, they are homeboys.  They are friends.

I think I see a possibility of making some friendships here, making homeboys.  My workout mate is a Korean who lived in the Midwest most of his life and speaks as if he was an American.  He can't speak a lick of Korean.  He's athletic and has the attitude.  My New Zeland, dart mate is a bit of a loner and most important is loyal.  He has an amazing way to meet Korean girls and is just cheesy.  Both are named John.  It's so fucking weird.  But I want us to all hang out.  I think it'll work.  We cause some ruckus around town and just have a good time.

What about me in this possible trio?  Well~besides being the gastronomique... I throw the party, baby.
And here I am responding to personal ads on Craigslist, Seoul.  It's funny.

Quick thoughts before a casual shoot~

Shooting for an early night tonight.  It's 6:38pm.  I'm going to meet one of the guys that won the tournament 2 Sundays ago in Suwon.  It's totally new territory and am looking forward to exploring it.  The name of the joint is S-Bar.  The owner has her picture up of her shooting darts.  And for some reason, I recognize her closed form shot sequence from somewheres, but I just can't place it.  They seem to idolize her.  As for this young cat that I'm meeting, he's lived in Queens, Brooklyn and has a nice youthful pop to him.  I'm playing for fun, but would like to score high on the charts tonight.

Just cooked a quick meal:
Protein........  2 Eggs, fried medium well with a crispy bottom.
Carb...........  Fried rice with gochujang and seaweed.
Vegetable.... 6 branches of big size bok choy in mustard sauce.
Drink...........  12 oz Cass Beer.
It was delicious, a bit of a gourmet college feel to it.  Should last for the night, though.

The Capacity to Accept

When you let someone into your life it changes everything....................
What exactly do I mean?

Try and picture a dormitory room.  The space is limited.  There are temperature controls.  The flatmates share the same air, so if one person decides to smoke the other inhales second hand.

For some, their capacity to let people into their lives is bountiful.  Look at nuns, or anyone doing volunteer work with the impoverished.  Their 'inner homes' shall we say, would be like a castle- being able to share and sacrifice their time and attention for the needy.

Any leadership position requires that they let people into their lives.  That's why large business environments do not suit me.  When I open my own business, I want to know all of my employees.  It'sa gonna' be like the mafia~ you protect your people.  You take care of them, their needs and such.

My road has been looping around into little side alleys and up and down hills.  It meanders and shifts from gravel to pavement to grass.  I follow the vein from my wrist to shoulder and watch it until it hides deeper, closer to the heart.  I'm not drunk, but soon may as I follow this road into the city.  I smell my feet~

What is my capacity?  By the books, it seems to be pretty high considering how the student's and I interact.  How?  Well, for one thing I offer some good lessons.  I don't allow nonsense in the class.  And I'm flexible with them.  I hope I'm fair...  even if those little rug busters break my rules such as:  When someone is speaking you listen.  Raise your hand when you have a question.  At times I feel like I'm trying to orchestrate a stampede.

What about this?  A ballet dancer leaps into the air.  Her partner catches her and then instantly she twirls. Their line makes intricate patterns, the nexus point glows from the abdomen~ the core.  They make magic for all to see and wonder if such possibilities exist.

The capacity for one shatters all.  The nuns find strength in God, the business executive climbs for power, and for the artist~  it may be to find some  kind of purpose in all of this, I suppose.  A dance is forever, and just maybe I'll have that dance.

My friends Socrates B and Cryogenic Stacy now have a third~ Lychii!  What of their capacities?

We are all oceans in the hands of God

I'm off to toss some darts.  Steady, I tell myself.  Steady...

Unlearning how to cook? Man! how about this?

I'm not really a nice guy.   I mean, there are things about selfishness that I don't agree with.  And it's okay to disagree, but tonight... I shot darts really well.

Ends up that Nizi had a boyfriend that supported her laziness not to compete.  Her bar really looked different tonight.  It wasn't as posh as it normally looked.   Everyone wore different uniforms... It kinda' makes me sad, though.  Because the selfishness comes out in me, and I had to say some kind of last word.  Because really, I didn't know what the fuck was going on.  I'm thinking about not publishing this, 'cause what good is it``` this delayed pent up shit that I feel about some insignificant game... I went to my usual dart bar tonight just to end this weekend cabin fever.   I get a few brews in me, and decide to go to New York Bar.  Nizi is off work, and I didn't notice her.  It wasn't until I hear a high pitch voice that I turn my head, and she's there sitting with some panda hat looking dude.

He's her boyfriend, a real softy.  She says sorry over and over again.  What am I suppose to do except explain to her that I ended up going to the tournament and supporting the team that won.  I pumped ego into them.  We would've got the the competition, but what good is it to try and explain this to someone that's not ready to listen.   I know that I'm a competitive asshole...I know this.... but damn it, in the end it is all for fun.  I'm so sorry for ruining any reputations.   ..........  damn it, that bar tonight was so quiet,  every bullseye I  hit made an echo in that room... I said earlier that I didn't want to compete... and that's exactly my problem....  Just give me your best~~~~  that's all I ask for.... and who the fuck am I????

Connected from a toss~

It's been 4 weeks since my last Korean class.  I went up a level.  This class is taught strictly in Korean.  The teacher is Mrs. Cha.  She's an elementary school teacher, and has a very childish quirk to her.  She probably doesn't use the white board much at her day job, because she's not very efficient with board space.  She may take 1 minute writing something on the board, and then soon after erase it all.  There are three other students, all women from Vietnam.  They speak with a real high twang, and are much more fluent than I am.  There is definitely going to be some work here, because I understand probably 3 percent of what she is saying.  No worries, it's only uphill from here..

As for darts, I've decided to shoot up a level- from a B6 to a B7 ranking.  I've just been noticing how inconsistent the shooters are in my level.  The B7-B8 shooters are all on the margin between nerves and A-shooters.  It's such a mental sport!  In the meantime, I've discovered a bar in Suwon that has a good atmosphere, and some rockin' dart boards.  It's a bit of a party place, but I've spotted some shooters.  When they swipe their cards and see their call names on the screen, it's a pretty good feeling that I've seen their ranking online.  Yes, I care about ranking, but I mainly like the system involved-  anyone in Korea and Japan can quickly discern who is who.  It's a community of people obsessed with aiming.  It's like, "Ah, you're from the Band of Jack in Sanbon, yah?- let's shoot shall we?"  Funny~

On lesson plans:
Only three more lessons left for this term.  The new teacher from New Zealand is bright and promising.  She's a Kiopo~ A Korean that has lived most of her life in another country and is bilingual.  She likes to eat, I can tell.  Anyways, after this back to Summer camp agendas.  There are two I have to prepare for- one for my school, and the big one in the mountains of Cheongyang.  The last time I was there it was all frozen with snow.  This time it will be sweltering hot.  My assignment will be teaching elementary kids English using cooking as the theme.  I'll have my own kitchen, ha!  Oh the dishes, funny~

Today I bought groceries and whipped up Sinigang.  It was wonderful!  I loaded it up with big size Bok Choy, Carrots, Onion, and Large Cubed Pork, oh yes, and finished it with 31-40 Tail-on Shrimp.  FYI for anyone interested- the 31-40 # is a count which tells a buyer that the frozen bag of shrimp has about 31-40 shrimp.  PND- means pealed and deveined.  And of course the higher the number the smaller the shrimp, and vice versa.  Shrimp has such a great yield.  You can use just about every part of the product.  It's weird that whenever you're catching shrimp in the boondocks, the lure is cow patties.  So, this delicious Crustacean is a bottom feeder- oh that vein is so sandy in your mouth! funny~

New Idea in a serious way~~

In the midst of a messy apartment....

Maybe Europe, practice a trade that I'm taking for granted...

What is it?

All these things are just hobbies, really.
Illusions of glory~
Wanting something that doesn't matter when no one is there to maybe pat
you on the back.
A baby~

What about you?
Tell me about yourself, anything.
So excited just to receive a text message from you.
Anyone can agree..

Spin in a circle until nothing makes sense anymore.
A finger nail~ crescent moon snapped away from time.
It balances on a pebble, heavier than a feather-
none the less- it bows to wind today.

Plow the brilliant glow of orange~
Savor the drip from your brow to brown below.
It's gone~ everything is.
Get away, far away from this awful smile.
For it's only a trap-
A mirage of happiness that ends all days.
Without you, there's only this dust.

So what is it?
A folded ear from a rabbit passing, and there in that instant
was a glimpse of something... what is it?
What is it!
Don't say food~
Is it the bullet on the white board- a pill that you want to
take... light it's powder to send all dreams assunder?
What is it?  snipping the hair is not enough, nor losing for
another chance to know and learn a terrible humble fumble... no!

Tomorrow will be fine, and that conversation with happiness
will fade into an insignificant pond which will rise into everything..
What was it?

Ditched the Tournament

Something terrible happened today.  The tournament was scheduled for 3:00 pm.  At 1:42 I receive a text message from Nizi, all in Korean, saying that she was sick and couldn't make it today.  Of course, I immediately call her, but no one picks up.  I call Jinny, my hairdresser to speak with her and ask about just how sick she is.  According to Jinny, she was a bit rude and insisted that she was sick.

What can you do in a situation like this?  I'm shocked.  I still went to the tournament to size up the competition, the same competition that we WOULD HAVE gone against.  And, while watching them I was thinking how we COULD HAVE taken this round decisively.  At this very moment I'm still trying to figure why Nizi would do something like this.  I've practiced so hard.  Every competitor in the entire country of Korea has been training for this open tournament.

I have to rule out the possibility that I was putting too much pressure on Nizi.  How I would come to her bar about three times a week just to shoot a quick set with her.  And I have been noticing how she would avoid me more and more each time I was there.  The past two weeks she would flutter her eyes, in an annoyed way whenever she was forced to speak  in English.  All these clues lead me to believe that there was a point when she didn't want to compete anymore.  I just don't buy that she was sick.  It could have been anything, really.

Last night, Korea won their opening game against Greece.  The streets were lined with red shirts chanting and celebrating the 2-0 victory.  Was Nizi out late drinking and partying?  Maybe fucked some dude and slept over until it was too late for the tourny?

Is it even worth trying to know why?  It's so hard to swallow all of this.  I mean, I have been drinking heavily during this training session.  Is this a sign of some sort by God?  I am thinking about mom, and I've used darts to focus my energies away from her condition.  My house is messy.  Motivation for work is not high as last year.  I'm confused....

As for Sophia and Bruce, their baby boy Trevor aka Lychii, was born on June 9, 2010.  Darling, darling~~ so awesome!!  What a new beginning for them- the changes.

As for darts, I'm not going to hang them up just yet.  The last text message I sent when Nizi wasn't picking up was this:

WE CAN WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Round 2: Level Up Tournament in 안산

Today is the day we shoot.
I visited the bar a few days ago, just to see the structure.
It's a bit tight with soccer fans stuff all over the place, of course
because of the  World Cup.
The lighting is fine, and the machines are maintained.
The staff are kind folks, and it just so happens the team
that beat us is one of the bartenders there..  So, we are
at the rival's home court.

It's going to be shake n' bake, baby!  Rock it steady, and
keep the waves coming so that Nizi and I can take
this bad boy home!!

Only three darts~  make each count.

Disarray and sloth~

Opening words~

Oh gosh darn it!

When this tournament is over, I'll be out of your life- Nizi.  A window between us has passed by.

This week I'm just filling in holes with lessons.  Summer camps are coming soon,
and it'll be a pleasure to interact with elementary students again.  They're cute and aren't
scared of having fun.

Sometimes I feel like ol'whitey when I play darts-- in that I need to be drunk to perform
as the college greek kids say about dancing.

The dart family at the bar I go to has accepted me.  I'm one of them now... stats and all.
The so called 'father' doesn't trust me, though.  I need to speak this language, but there is still something about Jack that gives me a goose pimple.  Is it that I corned him in Cricket, and stole two 501 master out games on him?  No, it's not that.  Is it that I'm an American Asian, and his tone changes just a bit, when a white westerner speaks to him?  Nope, not that either.  I'll never know for sure, I suppose..   There is just a personality line that's been drawn- it's there, I know it.

I've been a bit sick of 대한민국 (Korea) lately.  It's mainly because I'm lonely, and haven't had sex in a while.  And also, it's me~ I can't stop time.  There's a frustration that needs to be calmed by another person.  I reach out for a connection, and no one is there that matches my weird quirk.  Cultural differences here, that I have yet to comprehend.  Thinking about it, it's not that bad...  Everything lately has been so inflated in my life.  I need to visit my mother this summer.  I need a freakin' vacation, I suppose.

It's late, 3:30.  The lesson tomorrow for the kids is a bit difficult.  We'll see how the reading assignments go.  I'm recycling lessons with the younger ones.  There needs to be a change up-- blah blah blah!

The Heat~

Let's begin the month by saying- bring on the heat.  It's time to sweat and show a bit more skin.

Dart training has taken a toll on my kidneys.  I feel them working overtime.  My skin excretes toxins, which I smell one too many mornings.  If Nizi and I get past this round, I'm going to be surprised.  The skill levels are expected to be on the margin.  The nerves is what's going to separate mediocre from show-time play.  Nizi is busy at work and hasn't had time to practice.  We have 7 days until the tournament.  I trust her, especially in her 501-game.  If I don't shoot well in Cricket, then we're in trouble.  I just have to shoot well then.

On nerves:
Waves come in sets.  Catch it!  When you ride it, there is clarity.
It's far from aiming, it's when you just know.
On point
In stroke
On a roll
A streak
Miracles
                                         ............Good to be alive

That's my dream.  To get away from all of this.  Have a family and not compete with all the world's madness.
I want to laugh where only the trees can hear our happiness.
If only your lips knew mine, as they once did when angels drew heaven on snow flakes.
A ragged glove now wraps my heart-
Where rose petals burn to start fires for bums to warm their hands in garbage tins.
Simple days for safe answers, and the only question is hot or cold water.
Wednesday to Monday- used or new
take aim~

Set your foot, and begin the balancing act.
The wire is tight enough for one, only I can go.  15 minutes and
when I return you'll be asleep.  And my nightmare will be down there
where roses burn.  Take aim~  the heat is home.

Darts in 서울

Log onto www.edarts.kr. and then click on rankings.  You see the top 300+ players shooting all over Korea.  The top seed players are in Division 1, A-Rankings.  It's unbelievable to see these guys shoot.  They rarely miss, of course.  Their shot sequence is so fast.  It's like  they shoot from instinct, 1-2-3 bam!

Last night, John and I explored dart bars in Seoul.  We go to 홍대.  We meet his friend, Paul who is an AA13 shooter, and was once the number 1 player in Korea.  He knows all the shooters and is greeted at the door with much respect.  He's also an alcoholic shooter.  We pounded some beer last night.

The first bar we go to was a joint called Shooters.  We go into the basement and see 5 Phoenix dart boards, a dart supply store, and shooters.  Everything is painted black, which helps to focus on the boards.  I buy new shafts and some heart-shaped strawberry flights for Nizi.  We play a game and soon get restless for some more seasoning.

The second bar we venture off to was called Keepsake.  The bar was posh, and the moment we walked in I smell perfume.  Broads were everywhere- girls sporting early Spring cocktail slits and their boyfriends in tow.  Paul is a fast walker, and we race to the back to snag an open board.  Unlike Shooters Bar, this place was loud.  It took a while to get focused while shooting.  But then, I finally see Paul really shoot.  It's unreal the speed and accuracy this guy has.  People are turning their heads to watch us play.  Yeah, we brought our own darts, but it was surely a show to watch.  Not so much for John and I, although we held our own... but for Paul, geez the guy is an explosion of shots all hitting the tip of a needle.

The third bar we explore was the climax of the night.  The moment you walk into Bar 501, your perspective for darts changes forever.  This was the grand palace of darts.  Vaulted ceilings, 20 plus dart machines, and then the two Phoenix Dart boards placed on center stage with a huge LCD to show scores.  It was dart mania in this place.  This was where I finally saw great shooters play.  1-2-3 bam, bullseye after bulls, triple and triple, closed... There was no room for error with these shooters.  John and I enjoy a game together on a corner spot.  The good thing about this place, was that smoking was prohibited in the carpeted dart area.

Lastly, we go to one last bar which I cannot remember the name of because I was drunken at this point.  John and Paul continue to shoot, and I go outside to vomit.  An idea came into my mind while I was bent over--- this lifestyle of shooting darts has not been healthy for me.  I'm a drunk shooter...  It's late night.  The only thing I remember about the last bar was that it was a tiki bar, two old school phoenix dart boards and .. that was it.

Today my body was in complete disarray.  I just rested and watched movies.  Cooked dinner, and now feeling a bit lonely.  Tried to call some friends in NY and FL, but nobody home.

I like shooting darts~  It's a hobby.  I take it seriously, though because I like winning and shooting a damn good game.  Last night was important to see, and I'm happy to have had the opportunity to play with A-Shooters.  I learned a few things for my own game, especially for 501, hat tricks, and form.  I have about 5 million more shots before I can hit what I'm aiming for consistently.  But it's okay.  놀자~~ It's fun!  Here is my ranking for now-  Zelda
